Hidden Treasure

There comes a time when we all find something that we have searched for all our lives. A search that has be marred with a rollercoaster of life experiences while simultaneously teaching us the art of patience. As humans, the idea that we are naturally wired to search is anything but far-fetched. The human life is a constant cycle riddled with our efforts to search and our ability to find. Sometimes when we search for something, we find it, but the way to get there is not always straight forward.

I’m quite the thinker as you can probably tell. I love to think about anything worth thinking about. Another thing I also love to do is investigate. I’m the type of person to fully immerse myself in finding out detailed information about things that spark my interest. Including people and places that spark my interest too. For this reason, I am constantly searching for answers and sometimes, along the tracks of my search, I come across hidden treasures.

There’re only a few things that are more annoying than not finding something that you’re looking for. Most especially if you feel like you’re looking in the right place. I feel like sometimes the things that we want the most seem so hidden, far from our reach. The extremes may vary from the simplest things to the much more complex things that we want. From a matching sock to a life partner. Still, we seek.

Seek and keep on seeking and you will find – Matthew 7:7b AMP

Even as a person who loves to investigate, I find myself losing patience sometimes when I can’t find something I’m looking for. I’m starting to think that maybe my impatience might be tied to the amount of urgency that I ascribe to what I’m looking for in the moment. The more urgent it seems in my mind the less patience I will have in my search for it. I think its basic, an easy thing to understand.

With that considered, I am curious to know what I have ascribed a certain amount of urgency to. Maybe I need to ask the question, what do I feel like needs to be found as soon as possible? Deep down I know what those things are. And to be honest, for some things, I may not even have to dig that deep. The symptoms of a desperate search are quite often clear to see. With a reasonable degree of transparency with oneself, they reveal themselves on the surface.

A couple of weeks ago, I misplaced my National Registration Card. Considering that I still haven’t found it up to now, I think it’s safe to say that its officially lost. The thing is, I honestly can’t tell you at what point I misplaced it, but I can tell you when I realized that I had misplaced it. The latter came when I was in urgent need for it. Suddenly, I wanted to find it. Of course, I understand that this example is based on something that I possessed at an earlier point in time, but I wonder if it’s the same even with things that we have no history with. It most likely is the same.

One thing that is true about a search is that its unpredictable. There’s no telling how long it will take or what the characteristics of what we find on the other side of the search will be. It’s like a precise trade of our expectations for an incremental ounce of reality over and over again, until we find our finished product or at the very least our work in progress. I guess that speaks into what should inform our expectations.

Another thing that is true about a search is that most times, your chances of finding what you’re looking for are dependent on where you’re looking. Under normal circumstances, nobody looks for fried chicken at a pizza place. It’s a no brainer that no good pizza place has been primarily known for making good fried chicken. I think sometimes we make our search for something complicated all on our own. Whether it’s the fear of looking in the right place or our stubbornness in thinking where we look does not matter, our chances of finding what we are looking for are far less than if we just looked in the right place. Treasures are usually hidden in the value systems that they represent.

I understand that some of these things oscillate between linear and nonlinear. I guess that’s why the process of searching and finding is more of a case of probability. It’s more of a case of aligning yourself with the environments that are most likely to yield your desired results. And of course, most importantly, it’s a case of trusting that the Lord will give you the desires of your heart. That is the desires of your heart that align with His heart for the overall direction of your life.

I believe we are living in a time where people are searching for so much more. A time in which people are refusing to settle for less. A lot of people are indeed finding what they have been searching for.  Equally, there are so many counterfeits these days. Things that are not, underneath, what they supposedly represent on the surface. There are so many avenues for distraction and compromise. I guess ultimately, the decision is ours. It’s up to us to decide to seek for what belongs to us.

In the grand scheme of things, life is not a Disney movie. The unpredictability of the search means that sometimes we won’t always find what we are searching for. But that also means that others have the opportunity to be inspired by our relentless pursuit of the treasure that  awaits those who are bold enough to look for it.
