If I were to ask you the question, “Do you consider yourself blessed?”, what would your response be? Whatever your answer is, you have reasons why you may or may not feel blessed at this time. You may even question what it means to be blessed, as you should. Given that we all have a perspective of what it means to be blessed, it is important that we understand the whole truth because it’s a perspective that will guide how we live our lives. So, if you’ve ever wondered what it really means to be blessed, I have a philosophy.
I am certain that every one of us has heard the phrase I’m blessed used in one context or another. It is a phrase that is used by many people around us when they have a certain level of contentment and happiness with what they possess at a given time. One person may feel blessed because of their physical health, and another may feel blessed because they finally got a chance to purchase their dream car. All the same, what drives this feeling of being blessed is a level of contentment and happiness with life. A recognition of the need to be grateful for what we have.
The word blessing, according to Merriam Webster, is defined as, “a thing conducive to happiness or welfare”. Another definition that I really like is one from the Oxford English Dictionary which defines the word blessing as, “a beneficial thing for which one is grateful”. The reason I like the second definition is because I think benefit and gratitude are two good places to start from if we are to try and understand what the word blessing really means.
How do you Identify what is and isn’t a blessing to you?
The answer lies in the idea that if it is beneficial and you are able to be grateful for it, it is a blessing. I guess it would be safe to say that sometimes you and I may not realise what things in our lives are blessings because we don’t see the benefit of the said things. Thus the inability to see benefit correlates to a failure to be grateful.
Are there things that we often view to be bigger blessings than others? What are they?
I think it wouldn’t be strange to anyone to conclude that indeed there are some things that society as a whole has idolised and placed higher up the hierarchy of how much of a blessing something is. I personally don’t think that this is a modern development and while I don’t have evidence to prove it, I honestly feel like this is an idea that has been around for a long time. I’m sure you have an idea of what I’m talking about. If you don’t, I’m talking about how we view material possessions. I’m not the type of person to demonise material possessions. I think that would be unreasonable of me, especially considering how blessed I have been by material possessions. I however just think they cannot or should not be at the top of the list. I want to use the term material possessions to include accolades and pretty much anything that can be measured by the metrics of this world. These are the things that we normally put at the top of our list. It is in such a way that we don’t even realise that our conversations sometimes drift away into this accreditation universe.
What should we be most grateful for?
What a question to answer! Just like it is normal for us to be grateful for the fruit that a plant produces, often missing the value of the tree itself, it is expected that we are usually grateful for the by-product of something, often not recognizing the source. What is this source? God himself. He is a source of all good by-products, worthy of all the recognition that we can ever give.
What is the Greatest blessing?
As young as I am, I think I have had a lot of chances to wrestle with the idea of what the greatest blessing really is. I have experienced both abundance and lack, and out of that I think I’ve had the opportunity to conclude on this topic devoid of bias.
At a certain stage of life, you begin to question what really matters. It isn’t an uncommon thing to notice that with growth, we tend to revaluate our values. Our approach towards life begins to mature and develop. In this light, the things that we consider to be blessings also mature and take on a deeper meaning.
That said, we have explored how we can identify the things in our lives that can be considered blessings, we have shed light into what we usually think are the biggest blessings and we have concluded on what we should be most grateful for. One task remains. We’re left with figuring out what the greatest blessing is.
This question is one that is repeatedly answered throughout the different seasons of life. I have realised that the greatest blessing that one can ever have in their lives is people. Because if we really take time to think about it, the by-products of life that we are so intent on having come to us easier when we are connected to good people. These are the people help us, care for us, fight for us, protect for us and provide for us in various ways. Ways that are beyond what we can ever see with our eyes alone.
I can’t even begin to tell you how many times my life has been impacted by people. It’s too many to count. Overall, I am grateful to God that He has blessed me with so many good people in my life. That alone is a blessing that come’s second to none. I know that if anything good becomes of my life, it is because I stayed connected to people that helped me become exactly who I was created to be. A person who was blessed with everything he ever needed to live fulfilled. A person who was blessed with good people.
