OUTLETS

Outlets; everyone has them. Some are easily recognizable, others have to be sought after. It’s those things that we need in order to blow off some steam or calm down and put ourselves in a position where we can think more logically and reasonably .

How do you deal with anxiety, stress or disappointment ?

I’ll admit it, I’m at my worst when I’m anxious, stressed or disappointed. Somehow, the occurrence of one unfortunate event cripples my hopes for the success of other near-future plans. I could tell you of how my laptop died immediately before I started typing this post, causing me to almost give up on my commitment to upload every two weeks but that’s a story for another day.

I constantly try to find ways to calm down as soon as I feel my brain being scalded by the hot steam of life’s pressures and disappointments. I call these “ways” my outlets.

Whether it’s listening to a John Mayer acoustic performance or watching an episode of one of my favorite Disney shows, the necessity to calm down is proving to take the upper hand over the need to “get things done”. The attempt to achieve this though, is more successful on paper than in reality. We live in a success driven world. The pressure of not doing enough, not having enough or even to the extreme of not being enough, has by far exceeded its peak. Still, I cannot stress enough the importance of finding ways to calm down.

As a serial perfectionist, I envision things going a certain specific way. I rarely make room for deviations and if I do , I count them as a loss. Im not proud of this. I’ve come to find that I can’t survive this life if I choose to remain a serial perfectionist. Life is full of deviations, things you didn’t see coming, returns on relational investments that you didn’t anticipate. The disappointments of life are like a snake bite but you decide whether to let the venom enter your bloodstream or break the flow of the venom while you await your antidote.

There are so many things that demand our attention these days. A lot of us if not all of us have been granted the access to excess. With so much information at our disposal, it’s very easy to drown in the 21st century fast-paced success-driven world. Taking breaks is slowly starting to feel like every other excuse made for not achieving what you set out to achieve.

Here’s what I think though. You need a break and if you don’t think you need it, you at least deserve it. You need to identify those things that help you be at ease even when you’re under pressure or when you fail at something.

Life gets more challenging with age. Expectations lean more toward being insurmountable as you grow older, so you need to start building a habit of taking breaks. Learning how to calm down is more of an active process than a passive one.

You need to know your outlets; everyone has them. Some are easily recognizable, others have to be sought after. It’s those things that we need in order to blow off some steam or calm down and put ourselves in a position where we can think more logically and reasonably .
